The Internet of Things: Final

Here is my Script Describing everything I was saying:

Script
These are some movie clips that are going to help me define the future concept of the internet of things, which is becoming less of a future concept and more of a “NOW” concept. The internet of things refers to objects for example household objects like smart appliances or it can be city wide objects like streets, lights and buildings etc. They are all connected by the internet which means they are all quote smart, constantly gaining information and distributing information and eventually becoming eventually in the future a smart atmosphere with all of this data about everyone single person . It’s pretty incredible to think about,
In this film, Disney’s smart house you see just that. The house is gaining information about the new family and then readjusting to make their life more comfortable. In this scene, the boy talks and the house analyzes his overall health and then breaks down his diet for him. Later the girl asks for a smoothie and the house makes one for her and when she ends up dropping it, the house cleans it up for her because it is a smart house and knows how adapt to make solutions for certain problems like every day spills and messes. Later in this movie the boy messes with the houses software and , PAT the house, which stands for Personal Applied Technology ends up holding them hostage and tries to be there mother. So this is an example of a glitch in smart house technology, It begs the question, what happens if the technology gets too smart and then fights back?
The reason I picked this clip from iron man is because the everyday ordinary alarm clock controlled by JARVIS his computerized butler is turned into this smart technology. Something as simple as being woken up by you alarm clock is turned into this experience not only complete with a beautiful view of the beach and a voice saying good morning, but you are immediately updated with information about the day like temperature, time, surf, tides and etc.
This scene from the fifth element is similar in that it demonstrates the same idea. The smart objects in his home know that he is a wake and makes all of this noise trying to further wake him up and get him out of bed. And when he gets out of bed the bed just knows to go into the wall which is pretty cool. All of the smart objects in his home have a routine that is set up by him and his overall needs.
This is another clip from the fifth element and I chose it because is another great example of smart appliances. The objects are serving him water and fruit and it knew when he took a cherry, Interestingly enough the other man in the video says, “where’s your robot to pat you on the back?” when he starts choking. This asks another question, will technology ever be able to replace human beings or will there no longer be a need for social human interaction for that matter?
In Disney’s WALL-E is this futuristic earth less setting and everything is smart and everything is made to serve humans. The chairs take them places so they don’t even have to be mobile anymore as they talk to other people on a hologram Skype kind of thing. This is almost a scary glimpse into the future because they are completely oblivious to everything around them completely reliant on technology.

Future

For the future project I think we could do another website.  I was trying to think of a more creative way to portray the future of the internet successfully but i think with the amount of time that we will have it might be good to go a more simple route.  It might be cool to experiment with more ways of making the page look cool or even use a different program like Jessi was saying today with this current project.  I think it will be interesting to use online communication for this project which in a way is could maybe even be the future of of education, completely on the internet.  Whatever we end up doing I know its going to be good because all of our past project were just too cool!

How it Works

This week was not as bad as I thought it would be. The “how it works” portion of the internet is probably where I was most clueless and it feels good to be done with it, while learning a lot through research.  I really liked writing  HTML and I think that was probably my favorite part because we could put together everything we had learned about and design a website. So cool. Even though it was so frustrating at times it was also really exciting seeing what my page looked like after I typed the HTML and being done with it finally felt so good. I think that Steven did a really good job having an idea of where we were headed and being organized from day one.  I think that really helped keep everyone on track and see progress.  I think the class as a whole did a really great job and we should be proud of this one.  Keep up the good work everyone!

Work in Progress

Seeing where the class is at for our history timeline today was pretty productive.  We have to do some reformatting tonight to make it look more uniform.  I think that everyone is putting in some good work and that it will come along really nicely.  As one of the directors of this history project,  I cant wait to see the product of all our collaborative work.  This weekend Alex and I will put it all together in the final timeline and be able to dust our hands off. Almost there.

The guest speaker today was awesome.  It was really cool to hear about the 70′s from someone who lived through it. First hand perspectives are always the best and most interesting. I only wish we had more time to listen and ask questions however I think he said he had said that he would talk to us again. Great class today.

Summary of the documentary “Future of the Internet:PART 4 – The Cloud: Building in Mid-Air”

The video defines the Cloud as just the shift from machines (that provide storage or computing hardware) to virtual machines with no limits to storage.  The cloud is faster, easier to obtain, has better performance, allows safety and security and more reliable to name some of the benefits.  Many companies are using the cloud and many people will switch to the cloud in the future.   Unlimited data can be stored on the cloud.  Cloud computing is considered the future of the internet according to this documentary.  Consumers are predicted to begin using the cloud in there everyday life and cloud computing will become more and more familiar with the world.  Some of the negatives of the cloud mentioned in this documentary is mostly skepticism of the security because people don’t really know or understand what the cloud is. Summary of “Integration of Utilities Infrastructures in a Future Internet Enabled Smart City Framework” by:Luis Sánchez *, Ignacio Elicegui, Javier Cuesta, Luis Muñoz and Jorge Lanza

This article outlines what a smart city might be like in the future incorporating the internet of things.  The overall goal of having a smart city is to improve life overall as a community.  In the article the authors talk about 6 factors to produce a smart city.  These are smart economy, mobility, environment,  people, living and smart governance according to the article.  Which these 6 things a smart city may be possible in the future.  They mention a few different companies trying to work on the idea of a smart city such as Cisco Smart, but all of them have one thing in common, having a network of connections allowing people and objects to communicate and almost be as one.  For more information, here’s the LINK!

Summary of “Service Industry for Teachers? Using the Internet to Plan Lessons” By:Reinhold Hedtke, Joachim Kahlert, Volker Schwier and Ulrike Winkelmann

In today’s educational world, more and more teachers are using resources from the internet to help them plan lessons.  Specifically set in Germany, the article discusses how in certain areas the internet is not a primary resource due to lack of funding in schools and lack of internet teaching material.  A recent petition called Schools to the Net was made to introduce the Internet and multimedia in schools.  The desire to close the gap between technology and education is expressed in this article as well.  As future teacher myself I know how important internet is to me.  When planning lessons the internet is helpful to come up with creative ideas and activities for lessons or units.  Technology is changing the classrooms.  Even the chalkboards have turned into smart boards with access to the internet while teaching.  For more information, here’s the LINK!
